In furtherance of crystallizing the vision for capacity development and continuing legal education training on provisions of the ACJA for legal practitioners in Nigeria through the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Institute of Continuing Legal Education (ICLE) and the NBA-MacArthur project team has continued to make giant strides in ensuring tangible delivery on the specific goals of the NBA-MACARTHUR project on capacity building. It is in this regard that the General Secretary of the NBA, Mr. Isiaka Abiola Olagunju led a delegation of the NBA-MacArthur Project team to the office of the Director General of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS) Professor Adedeji Adekunle, SAN in his office at the Supreme complex, Abuja.
In his remarks, Aare Isiaka Abiola Olagunju, Esq introduced members of the delegation and gave a brief background of the NBA-MacArthur project activities which NIALS is a Cohort grantee. He informed the DG that the delegation came to tap from NIALS resources for the purpose of designing and developing CURRICULUM AND COURSE CONTENTS for the Continuing Legal Education Website/E-Learning Portal to advance the continuing professional development and training of lawyers in Nigeria. “We are here to learn from the challenges of NIALS in the development of course modules and E-learning portal”. He said.
He added that the NBA has devoted so much time and energy in reforming the association from a unionized Association to a professional body.
In his remarks, Prof. Adedeji Adekunle, SAN commended the purposeful way the NBA-ACJ project team is going about its activities. He said; “when I saw your Request for Proposal (RFP) for this project, I called my team and I commended the NBA for the purposeful way and manner you are discharging your mandate”.
He informed the delegation that NIALS is currently developing three curricular; for defense counsels, prosecutors and judges, and assured the General Secretary of advance copies as soon as they are concluded.
He, however, underscored the importance of getting dedicated content writers to design and break down the course contents for easy assimilation. “Online learning is more of an activity than reading, therefore, it is important to turn long prose into interactive questions”
In his closing remarks, the NBA-MacArthur Project Coordinator Muritala Abdul-Rasheed, Esq, thanked the DG for always willing to give assisting hands to the NBA. He described Prof. Adedeji Adekunle, SAN as a highly resourceful person in whom the NBA looked up to when it comes to academics and intellectual prowess. He said the aim of the project is to make sure that; “the online portal is beneficial to NBA members, as such we need your support and resources as one of the foremost institutions of learning in this country”.
