The Young Minds Congregate to retool the Young Nigerian Lawyer at their annual conference with the theme “Transforming Legal Practice for Young Lawyers: The Option of Information And Communication Technology”. Currently holding at the Nigerian Law School, Victoria Island, Lagos State.
The Opening Session of the Young Lawyers Forum Conference was set in motion with the opening remarks by the President of the NBA, A.B. Mahmood SAN. In his opening remark, he stated that he was particularly impressed by the level of enthusiasm he perceived from the young lawyers as evidenced from the number of persons in attendance at the conference. He took advantage of the rapt attention of the delegates in attendance to inform the young lawyers in his welcome Address that there would be another conference in Asaba next week focused on “The Review of the Administration of Criminal Justice in Nigeria”. He particularly encouraged the YLF to be enthused about the conference, as it would touch on issues that would bother on novel advancements that have been recorded in the Criminal system and those that were being projected for the sphere of criminal practice in Nigeria and premised on this he encouraged the YLF members in attendance to explore the early registration avenues available to enjoy the early-bird rate of N 5,000:00 per participant.
Following the opening remarks of the President of the NBA, the Hon. Justice Opeyimi, representing the Chief Judge of Lagos state gave her remarks. The representative of the Chief Judge lamented the numerous challenges faced by young lawyers bothering on the Inadequacy of mentoring for them as well as the slow pace of embracing technology. The honourable justice advocated for an early engagement and interaction with lawyers from the law school level, to enable them feel a grasp of the profession before they commenced their journey. She added that with perseverance and the continuous upgrading of ones’ self, there would be an eventual career elevation. She went further to highlight the skills that came together to make a young lawyer successful. All the skills she highlighted were intangible attributes to which she enjoined the young lawyers to cultivate and sustain, skills such as Good communication, judgement and analytical skills. To top it all off, she emphasized that young lawyers imbibe the culture of honesty and integrity, as she maintained that these are prime qualities a lawyer must also have as they proceeded to build their career in practice.
Thereafter, she declared the summit open and wished all the participants a memorable conference. Thereafter, the first session commenced with the discussion on the topic ¨Building a 21st Century Law Firm – Challenges and Opportunities for the Millenial Lawyers in Law Practice¨. The Session is Chaired by Mr. Yemi Candide – Johnson SAN with the SPeaker Mr. Wole Esan, the discussants are Messers Hamid Abdulkareem Desmond Ogba and Abiodun Oyeledun.
