Over the weekend, the legal community was numbly shocked with the news of the passing on of one of the finest jurists to be produced by the Nigerian Bench, the late Hon. Justice Mustapha Akanbi CON PCA (Rtd). Condolences have been pouring in from different quarters attesting to the collosal loss.

The learned Silk, Paul Usoro, SAN said: “It is with rude shock and sense of grief that I write to commiserate with the family and friends of Hon. Justice Mustapha Akanbi CON PCA (Rtd) on the demise of Hon. Justice Akanbi, CON,PCA (Rtd) was a President of the Court of Appeal and Pioneer Chairman of Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC. He was an eminent jurist whose judicial pronouncements and work in the justice sector contributed to law reform and development of our jurisprudence in Nigeria.

His Lordship was not only known for his sterling character and unimpeachable integrity, but he was also a fearless and incorruptible Judicial Officer, who rose to the pinnacle of the Court of Appeal as President. He was appointed as the Chairman of ICPC where he invested his time, energy and intellect to build the ICPC as a formidable anti corruption Agency in Nigeria.

A detribalized Leader, Justice Akanbi, was not only an accomplished administrator and public servant. He was also a community leader, who contributed a lot to his community, Kwara State and Nigeria. Indeed the Bar, Bench and legal profession will sorely miss his presence, counsel, wisdom and guidance.

On behalf of my family, I pray that the soul of late Hon. Justice Mustapha Akanbi CON, PCA (Rtd) rest in peace, and may the Almighty grant his family, friends, the Judiciary, Kwara State and Nigeria the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss of his demise.

Paul Usoro, SAN, FCIArb.
